BEDFORD PARK, Ill- Police in Bedford Park are investigating after an early morning shooting of a police officer at a gas station, police told CBS News Chicago.

At around 3:40 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a reported motor vehicle crash in the 6700 block of South Archer Rd in the small village located at the southwestern border of the Chicago city limits.

On arrival at the scene, responding officers found an unoccupied vehicle with heavy damage just off the roadway, authorities said.

Police said the vehicle was reported stolen in an aggravated carjacking in Chicago. Authorities say surveillance video reviewed showed two suspects fleeing southbound on the street after the crash.

The two suspects were located coming out of a grassy area and entering a vehicle at a nearby gas station a short time later. Officers attempted to conduct an investigatory stop of the two, whereby one of them refused to comply with officer commands and began to resist physically.

During a struggle that ensued, several shots were fired at an officer, striking him several times. The officer, who was not identified, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, where he was said to be in stable condition.

The suspect who shot the officer was taken into custody; two firearms were recovered at the scene.

This is a breaking story and will be updated as further information becomes available.
